A gorgeous pair of silver day and night earrings, circa 1800, featuring an abundance of foiled superb quality high domed rose cut diamonds.
They feature a round shaped upper part suspending a pear shaped pendant. The pear shaped surmounted part of the earring is composed of a tear shaped central element, built from a larger and smaller rose cut diamond placed atop each other. A double cluster of rose cut diamonds surrounds this central tear shaped part, both cluster rings comprise of seven medium sized and seven smaller sized rose cut diamonds. The round shaped surmount is centred around a large rose cut diamond and comprises of an inner and outer cluster of each seven medium and smaller sized rose cut diamonds.
The earrings are so-called day and night earrings; the top part of the earring is suitable to be worn individually for daytime, the detachable pendant can be added for evening wear.
When looking at the back we can recognize the high quality craftsmanship the original jeweller must have had. The mountings for the rose cut diamonds, which are closed from the back, a process which is needed for the foil setting, are connected with small vertical discs, giving maximum strength with minimal optical effect. The top part of the earrings are fitted at the back with a large tapering hook. Both hooks are positioned slightly of centre in mirror image, creating an optimal effect when worn. The base of this hook is rendered in silver, but it organically morphs into red gold and is fastened in a small purpose build hole at the back of the earring also executed in pink gold, another process that is indicative of the high level of skill and knowledge of their creator.
The overall effect of these earrings is very impressive and when going into detail there are many little details that are a true pleasure to look at too, all an irrefutable proof of the high level of craftsmanship of their maker.
