Peace in Jewellery: The Baroque Pigeon Pin

A Baroque stick pin, circa 1680, showcases the exquisite artistry of the era. Crafted in 14K yellow gold, this piece features the enduring pigeon motif, a symbol of peace and the Holy Ghost. Adorned with eight rose-cut diamonds and a central pearl, flanked by strass mimicking rubies and emeralds, it embodies love and harmony. The pin's back, a later addition, reflects the jewel's evolving history. This piece encapsulates the rich symbolism and opulence characteristic of the Baroque aesthetic.

Style specifics
Baroque is a style in art and decoration that developed shortly before 1600 and remained current in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style c.1730. It was started in Italy, and spread to Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and Spain and Portugal, with only a somewhat severely classical version being popular in France under Louis XIV. The style was a development of the Renaissance style and is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, by vigorous movement, and by rich ornament, based on classical sources, being symmetrical as distinguished from the asymmetry of the following Rococo style.

It was also the symbol for the Holy Ghost. The pigeon was the attribute of many saints. A pair of pigeons is known as the symbol of love and harmony. In China and Japan a pair of pigeons is an emblem of long life and faith.
