Vintage Vows: A Sapphire Ring Weaving Romance and History

This Art Deco-inspired engagement ring, crafted in the 1950s, is more than a symbol of commitment; it's a beacon of romance, joy, and a promise of becoming a cherished future heirloom. Its Belgian origins and 18K bi-color gold setting frame the story of two intertwining lives, with diamonds and sapphires symbolizing enduring love. The joy it brings extends beyond the moment of proposal, encompassing all the happy memories and milestones it will witness. As a future heirloom, it promises to carry these stories, emotions, and the legacy of love through generations, deepening in value and sentiment with time.

Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe this to be of Belgian origin.

Style: Although most people would call this style Art Deco it is more considered to be a product of the fifties of the Twentieth Century. Strongly influenced by Art Deco but also by the Retro style. That to most people this is Art Deco is no coincidence as both Retro style and Fifties style are the style successors of Art Deco. or more info on styles

Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)

Diamond(s): 14 brilliant cut diamonds with an estimated weight of ± 0.50ct. (colour and clarity: H/J, vs/si).

- All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since stones are not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.

Precious stones: One natural sapphire with an estimated weight of ± 1.10ct.
Treatment: most probably heat treated. Colour enhancement by heat treatment of ruby and sapphire is an accepted technique as long as it is mentioned by the seller.
12 marquise shaped sapphires . We did not check if the sapphires are lab produced or not as this information has no influence on the value of this jewel. Natural sapphires and lab produced sapphires were both used in this era, rather more for their effect than for their intrinsic value.

- All color stone weights are approximate since stones are not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
