A type of necklace in the form of a circular, flexible band of gold mesh from which may be suspended, directly or from short chains, a great number and variety of closely-spaced gold ornaments made as flowers, acorns, scarabs, heads of river-gods, sirens, amphorae, and framed gemstones, giving the appearance of a fringe. Such necklaces were made from the 7th century BC to the 3rd century AD in Rhodian, Etruscan, Hellenistic and Roman jewelry, and again later by Fortunata Pio Castellani. Also called a 'strap necklace'.
