A pearl that has had its colour artificially changed by staining, usually in an effort to imitate a rosée pearl. Some dark pearls are stained to simulate a black pearl by being soaked in a solution of silver nitrate or exposing them to ultraviolet rays or sunlight, then buffing them to give a lustrous effect.
